The glass village
and its old station

Orrefors is a village in Småland, in southern Sweden, that gave its name to one of the world's great glassmaking traditions. The Orrefors Glassworks was founded in 1898; the village grew around it.

Eva Fidjeland arrived in 1989 and set up her studio in the old railway station — a building that once connected this remote village to the wider world, and now connects visitors to the patient, handmade work of leaded glass. The juxtaposition is deliberate and apt.

Where Orrefors Crystal produces fine decorative objects by the thousand, Eva Fidjeland Glas produces singular pieces for specific places and people. Where the factory works with cut and polished crystal, Eva works with mouth-blown glass and lead — older materials, slower methods.

The studio is also a teaching space. Eva leads courses on the design programme at Folkuniversitetet in Lund, and welcomes visitors by appointment to see work in progress.
